I thought it might be interesting for all you lot, to do a series of '5 minutes with' style blogs. I've got a fantastic line of interviews heading your way, starting with San Francisco based artist, Aleksandra Zee. You may have noticed in previous blogs that I'm a big fan of reclaimed wood, vintage homeware and the like and so when my colleague showed me Aleksandra's work I was intrigued. It was the first I had seen like it and I was instantly drawn in. The materials mixed with 'desert' colours make for some gorgeous pieces. I got in touch with Aleksandra who very kindly provided the images below..so here is our first 5 minutes with..
Where are you based? Aleksandra: I am based out of San Francisco
What do you do? Aleksandra: I am a full-time artist, I work in a woodshop and make artwork out of new and reclaimed lath
How did you get into it? Aleksandra: I studied art in college, then right out of college I got a position working as the display artist for Anthropologie. I learned woodworking there, and it grew into a love for the material and process. I worked that job for a little over 3 years, gained a lot of growth with woodworking and then decided to go out on my own and perfect my craft.
Who or what inspires you? Aleksandra: Travel inspires me most. Seeing new landscapes of revisiting ones I feel in love with before. Adventure is the secret behind my artwork.
Is this your full-time role (art/commisioned pieces)? Aleksandra: Yes, I am fully self-sufficient on my craft. I cannot believe it is my life, I feel so lucky and driven to never let go away.
What is your dream job? Aleksandra: My dream job is what I am doing now, making a living off my artwork and traveling the world to gain inspiration. Its amazing!!!
Where's your favourite place to be? Aleksandra: I love the ocean and the desert. Bother places, though very different, center me and bring me peace and understanding of myself and my creative direction.
What is your most treasured piece in your home? Aleksandra: My boyfriend and my dog. :) What is your favourite piece of work to date? Aleksandra: My favorite pice is an 8ft.x8ft. piece that hangs in a clothing store, It came out so much better than I imagined.
What do you do to relax? Aleksandra: Take my pup to the beach and sit and breathe in the salt air. It centers me and relaxes me after a long day in the studio.
